Mike Holsten

Assistant Manager of Training
Transit Control Center/Metro Transit Police

  1. How many years have you worked at Metro Transit?
I’ve been with Metro Transit for 16 years now. Long enough to remember a few system changes, a few building moves, and at least a dozen “this is how we’re doing it from now on” moments.
  2. Current position, what do you do – what do you enjoy most about it?
I’m currently in charge of training at the Transit Control Center. I oversee onboarding for new employees and provide ongoing training for existing staff, along with supporting other departments outside of TCC.  What I enjoy most is helping new employees start their careers strong. Watching someone come in unsure, learn a complex job, gain confidence, and eventually thrive is incredibly rewarding. Knowing I had a small part in that success is gratitude enough. I also enjoy showing people outside of transit what we actually do in the TCC. Most people have no idea what happens behind the scenes, and I like being able to pull back the curtain a little.
  3. What do you do for fun outside of work?
Fun is relative these days. I have MS, which has really limited me in the past couple of years, and has limited some of the more “active” hobbies I used to enjoy. Back in the day, I played in an adult hockey league. Now I’ve transitioned to the highly competitive sport of lying down and sometimes sitting.  However, when I am sitting, I usually get to watch my kids play hockey, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, and swimming. (All overpriced organized sports!) I am essentially a full-time professional private Uber driver and spectator. And honestly, my favorite activity right now is doing absolutely nothing. No schedule. No alarms. No radio traffic. Just peace and quiet. It is a highly underrated hobby; I highly suggest it.
  4. Favorite band and/or food?
My favorite band is still Guns N’ Roses. (Was also my first concert in ’92) Some things just stick.  Favorite food is a tie between tacos and cheeseburgers. I refuse to choose. That feels like an unnecessary life decision.
